The Spirit of Macsabal 막사발
A humble bowl born from Korean earth, shaped with spontaneous honesty, and fired with pine wood for days until ash becomes glaze.
Originally crafted by Joseon dynasty village potters as everyday bowls for rice, tea, and soup, Macsabal (막사발) transcended utility to become revered worldwide for its natural, unpretentious beauty — celebrated as the pinnacle of tea bowl aesthetics.
Founded in 1998 by master potter Kim Yong Moon, the International Macsabal Wood Firing Symposiums created a living bridge of peace along the ancient ceramic Silk Road. Over nearly three decades, masters and students from across 30+ countries have gathered in Korea, Turkey, and China to construct traditional climbing kilns (Tongkama) and share fire, knowledge, and communion.
